The Royal Artillery Memorial, Hyde Park Corner, London (2002)

Oil on canvas, central panel 75x115cm, side panels 75x45cm

Private collection

This triptych was executed for a private commission. It depicts, in the most straightforward manner, the Royal Artillery Memorial on Hyde Park Corner, designed by the sculptor Charles Sergeant Jagger (1885-1934) and the architects Adams, Holden and Pearson. The memorial is notable for its realism, in contrast to much of the allegorical sculpture of the time (a telling example being the nearby Machine Gun Corps Memorial, erected the same year), especially in the carved reliefs, and the bronze of the dead soldier at its north side. Jagger had served in the First World War himself, and was awarded the military cross.
