Below the portrait of Clara, which is a bastardized version of Caravaggio's Judith, amongst the trompe l'oeil elements, I have included illustrations by Bertall from Alexandre Dumas' abridged version of Hoffman' tale, showing the Nutcracker, and Clara and the Nutcracker crossing a river en route to the Kingdom of the Sweets. On the left hand side is a picture of Clara and Fritz from the Royal Ballet production of 1984.
