Fritz

Fritz (2002)

Oil on canvas, 65x45cm

Certainly the least successful of this set, though I like the rendition of the choreographer Marius Petipa, the portrait of Fritz is based on Lewis Carroll's photograph of Reginald Southey. Marius Petipa wrote the libretto for the ballet, but was unable to then choreograph the original production due to illness. Overlapping this is a picture of the Nutcracker Prince leaping into battle, from the American Ballet Theatre production, nad, next to this, the adults at the Christmas party, from the Royal Ballet. I was seriously considering repainting the main portrait, but hadn't the time to go back to it, and so it has become the least favourite thing I've done in a few years.
