Sehnsucht Nach Dem Frülinge

Sehnsucht Nach Dem Frülinge (2001)

Oil on canvas, 80x80cm

The sculpture in this painting is a bacchante, in the Louvre. The landscape print in the left-hand side is a view of Salzburg, below which is a print of an eighteenth century viola, and a shot of the exterior of the Karlskirche in Salzburg. The torn piece of paper is a page from the English edition of Cesare Ripa's Iconologia, a famous seventeenth century handbook for artists and writers detailing allegorical representations of hundreds of abstract concepts; this page has Fame, Art, and Harmony. The whole of Ripa's text, and all the illustrations are available on the web as The English Emblem Book Project. On the right-hand side of the painting is an eighteenth century organ, an advertisement of a Mozart concert, and a title page to Cosi Fan Tutti.
