Build Your Own Fallout Shelter

Build Your Own Fallout Shelter (2003)

Downloadable PDF

Having built a model of the surface building of a deep level tube shelter for the portrait of Dr Martin Skittles, I'd come across the booklet 'Protect and Survive' in the course of my researches. The model that can be constructed from the sheet Build Your Own Fallout Shelter is based on the advice given in the Home Office booklet, published in 1980. This detailed what precautions could be taken in the event of a nuclear attack, which included how to make an 'inner refuge' inside a house, to protect a family from nuclear fallout. This was intended to be lived in for up to fourteen days, until radiation outside subsided to a 'safe' level. From that I designed this model to be printed on a postcard for a show, but also wanted to produce it as an A4 sheet. Print it out, colour it in with crayons, glue to light card, such as the back of a cereal packet, get an adult to cut it out for you and glue it together.
