Hatched Area

Hatched Area (2003)

Oil on canvas, 80x80cm

Private collection

This painting, named for the yellow markings painted onto the pavement in front of the fire exit doors, is primarily about formal concerns. It works as an abstract painting, through the arrangement of linear forms, with repeating diagonals set at oblique angles to each other. As with most of the other paintings that I have been working on recently, it is on a square canvas, which imposes its own logic onto composition. It can be very difficult to arrive at a satisfying composition in a square format: with Your Future Now, the balance is very awkward; in Hatched Area the composition seems to me to be very successful.
