Plastic Flies (2006)
Oil on board, 35.5x35.5cm
Private collection
The collection of objects in front of the fictive blackboard have a general theme of toys, games and childhood. I began with the packet of plastic flies, an ironic reference to a tradition of flies painted with a trompe l'oeil effect on often otherwise straight forward pictures. This suggested the theme for the painting. The photograph at the top left is of my piece Keep Out Of Reach Of Children, along with the letter A. I found the experimental spacesuit when researching for my painting 3D Martian Landscape. The Segel Boot card kit was a present given to me, inspired by my cut-out pieces. The small stereo card tucked in behind the plastic flies came from a set from London Zoo, which came with a collapsible stereo viewer. I've made this into a stereo anaglyph shown below.
