The version of Scene in a Museum in the painting is a work in progress proof; notably the view through to the next gallery up the stairs is not blocked. The photocopy of Artemisia Gentileschi's painting of Susanna and The Elders points up thematic associations with this picture, and one could also draw some inferences from the newspaper clipping that shows William S. Burroughs surrounded by targets. The postcard is Adolph Menzel's painting of his own studio wall.
