Counterpoint I

Counterpoint I (2001)

Oil on canvas, 80x60cm

The the main image is taken from a photograph of a statue to Handel: I thought the rather melancholic looking putto writing on a violin made a good contrast to the figure in Counterpoint II, which I began painting first. Below, suck onto a map of Vienna, from left to right, there is a photograph of an allegorical statue La Musique, the Austrian Emperor Joseph II, an engraving of a scene from Don Giovanni, under which is a photograph taken in the musical instruments gallery at the Victoria & Albert Museum.
