Counterpoint II (2001) Oil on canvas, 80x60cm |
||||
The main image in this painting is actually a rather elaborate lamp holder designed for the Paris Opera by Carpeaux, which being vaguely musical (the figure is holding a tambourine) seemed an appropriate hook to hang the composition on. The background is the renaissance rood loft from s'Hertogenbosch in the Victoria and Albert Museum, which I also used for both the Sehnsucht Nach Dem Frülinge paintings. I used the same map of Vienna for the background to the lower half of the painting as I did for Counterpoint I. Onto this , from left to right, are a score, a page from a book on Mozart the happened to use a Hogarth print (I liked the page as a whole with the text, so painted it all in), a title page to Mozart's opera Idomeneo, the interior of the Karlskirche in Salzburg, Mozart's birthplace, the statue of La Musique photographed from a different angle from that in Counterpoint I, and an eighteenth century tambourine. ©copyright 2005 Nicholas Middleton |
