Scene from a Contemporary Novel (2002)
The location for Scene from a Contemporary Novel is Pedley Street, E1, that I'd previously photographed for one of the panoramic pictures (Disused Railway Bridge, Shoreditch) and I thought that it was rich enough a location to use for one of my constructed photographs. The title, which doesn't refer to any novel in particular, disingenuously implies both the fictional or narrative nature of the picture, and its contemporaneity, as if notions of contemporaneousness are located within the signs and symbols of urban decay, and inner-city blight. Inevitably, the title remains slightly tongue in cheek.
